What's Happening ?

Result at the European Tow Show 2008

On the Thursday night as promised Richard Goddard bravely submitted himself to the humiliation of the 'Telford chain saw massacre' (a hair raising event) and raised in excess of £32,000 for RISC. Richard insisted that £5000 of this amount be donated to the Partner of Boarhunt's Driver Terry Booth

Friday night's various Auctions coupled with the RAC Walkabout Raffle raised some £5500 (you can see those items here) During the show RISC was also presented with Cheques by Midhurst Engineering, Ontime, Vision and the RAC. Bring the grand total RISC raised at this years Tow Show, to just under £58,500.

The RISC Trustees and Beneficiaries of these funds, would like to thank all those that gave their time, or their money and to say a special thank you to those that gave both!

Fund Raising (and Hair Raising) at the European Tow Show 2008

18 months ago Richard Goddard stated that he would cut his pony tail off for RISC (see article below, titled 'Richard offers to have it off - while you watch!'). He put a target of £30k on it thinking that he was quite safe….

Tragically for Richard he was not. Due to A. the generosity of the industry and B. A communal desire to see him humiliated, enough pledges of funds have been raised to make the event viable.  He should be able to slip away quietly to some hairdressing establishment and have the job done.

However we forgot about 'B' above and so it will now happen in front of everybody on Thursday Night at the Tow Show dinner

RHA in conjunction with ISUZU Trucks hold RISC event.

The Rescue and Recovery group of the RHA held a dinner and review at the Adelphi in Liverpool in October 2007. Isuzu Trucks sponsored the excellent dinner and dance with a strong sixties theme (including the hotel accommodation).

Stan Boardman (allegedly no relative) told some good jokes and The Cavern Beatles song some familiar tunes, Thanks to Isuzu generous sponsorship in excess of Ten Thousand Pounds was raised, by ticket sales and a well supported raffle. Once again the recovery industry showed its generous side.

A 'tongue in cheek' presentation of how RISC was reinvesting funds was given by Richard Goddard, but could not be read by all and so it is reproduced here

Dan runs to help RISC

Dan Sparks, Head of Supply Chain - Network Services, Norwich Union Insurance & RAC, has announced he is running the Great North Run on the 30th September, and he has chosen to run in aid of the RISC Charity.

Dan is responsible for the relationships that RAC and Norwich Union have with their network of roadside contractors across the UK & Europe, and as such is a close supporter of the RISC Charity and the work that it does to assist recovery operators should they have the unfortunate need.  Details of how you can sponsor Dan will be posted here shortly.

This is not the first time Dan has undertaken something like this - in fact, this half marathon is a bit of climb down following his successful completion of the London marathon last year.

Dan said, "Roadside contractors are an integral part of RAC's & NU's Service Delivery, and in doing so place themselves in dangerous roadside situations.  We fully support the work of RISC, and I am delighted to be able to try to raise as much money as possible for the charity through running this great race"

Dan Update

Dan completed the run and raised in excess of four and half thousand pound for RISC!.

Huge Support for RISC at the 2007 Tow Show.

The organiser of the European Tow Show 2007 selected RISC to be their supported Charity, for this year's show. As a result of this RISC Trustees were able to organise two auctions and a raffle.

The funds from these items when combined with all the other donations (including a single one of £20,000 from the RAC), made a grand total of £30,000. Our thanks go out to all those who donated prizes as well as those who made donations.

Richard offers to have it off - while you watch!

Richard Goddard is Chairman of the Road Haulage Association's Rescue & Recovery Group and long-time recovery operator. He announced (perhaps a little under pressure) at the IVR AGM and Annual Dinner, that he is happy to say goodbye to his pony tail.

All he asks in return is that everyone supports RISC, by pledging money to watch. If the industry can pledge £30,000 he will have it removed at next years European Tow Show  (2008).  Contact Richard if you would like to support this noble cause.

Great Idea by Mondial

On the 22 March 2007 Mondial UK, in partnership with Steve Ellis Head of Training at the RHA, presented two ‘Driving Hours Legislation’ seminars at their Croydon head quarters in. The day proved to be of great worth to both attendees and Mondial with a long question and answer session after each presentation. The day ended with a tour of our Customer Contact Centre.

Rather than have a fee for the day, Mondial kindly suggested a minimum donation of £10 per person towards RISC. The response from their agent network was excellent and as a result of their generosity Mondial raised £841. Not content with this their board of Directors, have doubled the figure and presented it to RISC.

Help Nikki to help herself

As many of you may know, Nikki King our good friend from Isuzu Trucks, has been recovering from a very nasty bout of pneumonia.

She says "This has been a big wake-up call and, at last, I really must give up my 40 a day cigarette habit! I am going, as usual, to my Clinic in Austria on 24th March and plan to come back a non-smoker. I have booked a hypnotherapist every day, acupuncture and will be armed with patches.

However, those of you who know me well know I have the willpower of an earthworm. So, the only way I can do this is first, if I feel I will be letting people down if I fail and, second if it hurts my pocket.

I have therefore decided to do a sponsored no smoking in aid of RISC. I will pledge to give up smoking from 24 March until Christmas 2007. If I fail, I will personally fund all monies pledged so the more money you generously pledge, the more it will hurt me to fail! Please help me and also help the boys and girls in the Recovery Industry"

A return e-mail to Nikki is all that is needed to pledge (click on the name to send)

European Tow Show 2007

For the second year running RISC has been selected as the charity to be supported at this years show. As always we are looking for people to sponsors prizes, to be raffled, or auctioned over the weekend.

There are three chances to sponsor prizes, two Friday night at the dinner, and one Saturday with a draw

Main Auction: (to be held on the Friday Night)
Three or four items. The prizes should be very unique or interesting and of a high value.

Silent Auction: (to be held on the Friday Night)
Eight to twelve items, with a broad appeal, typical value £250- £500. Certificates describing the prize, to be on display and presented to the winner, so they may collect their prize.

Walk around Raffle: (The draw for these prizes to take place midday on the Saturday)
A number of assorted prizes, typical value £250- £500. These will all be listed with details on a printout, the ‘walkers’ can show people and also on the RISC stand.

This industry is renowned for its ingenuity and so we are sure most sponsors will have come up with some unusual prizes. However if you are really ‘stumped’, remember you can select something from www.goldenmoments.com

If you think your company can help please contact us.

Cheryl goes for a run.

Cheryl Bland of Dave Bland Engineering the recovery equipment suppliers, has offered to run in add of RISC. Cheryl explains "I am hoping to run in the London Marathon in 2008, as I am not a member of a running club.... only a humble Fitness Instructor

As yet the places are not yet being awarded for the 2008 Marathon but I am keeping my eye on the website. I have applied for a place in the Great North Run this September which is 13 miles, if I am awarded a place I will try to raise some money for RISC along with the British Heart Foundation who I hope will give me a place. I will keep you informed"

We will keep every one informed of this brave attempt and tell you where to send pledges as we get the information.

One way to raise awareness of RISC

Click the picture to read abot the day and see more picturesA innovative way to tell people about RISC, was thought up by friends of RISC Trustee Andy Lambert. They had been looking for a way to celebrate his 60th birthday and knowing how important RISC was to him, they did it wearing RISC Tee-Shirts.

In Andy's words: "A group of my friends and relatives, treated me to a very different sort of birthday surprise. They decided to get me driving (or in some case ride in) 60 special vehicles.

These ranged from a Skate Board, to Concord and included a ride in an ambulance complete with two 'scantily dressed' nurses. It was a most wonderful day and more enjoyable because of the all their effort".
